Jenny's not browsing the internet and looking for magic chatrooms. Really.

Susan knocked on Jenny's door just a bit before lunch. "Good morning?"

"Oh, thank Goddess," said Jenny, looking up with a grin. "I am beyond bored." She waved at a chair and leaned back, kicking her legs up on her desk. "Grab some coffee and sit, please."

Susan laughed, and did both, taking a seat across from Jenny, carefully balancing her coffee. "How are your classes going? Anything new from your family?"

"I haven't heard a peep from the family since I left them," said Jenny, a smug grin at the corners of her mouth. "And classes are pretty much rocking along. How 'bout you? Got a new crop of patients, or is everyone remarkably sane?"

"Sane so far, though I'm using the time to read up on new techniques again. I expect that I'll get a few if the Island throws something strange and violent at them again, though." Susan took a sip of her coffee, then sighed. "I came here for another reason than to just visit with you, though."

"Oh?" Jenny's eyebrows travelled higher, and she sat up straight, her heels thunking against the floor. "So what's up?"

"You remember the -- vision, for lack of a better word-- that we saw at my birthday party? On the way back?"

Jenny sipped at her coffee. "Hard to forget that kind of vision," she said. "It felt pretty peaceful."

"Yes." Susan hadn't realized that, but Jenny had it right; the feeling of home had also been one of quiet, and rest. "That lamp-post was the first thing we saw, the first time we crossed over into Narnia. Right at the edge of the world."

"You found something else related to Narnia?" Jenny's smile blossomed. "So this is good, right?"

"Good, but confusing." Susan fished the half-a-handkerchief out of her pocket. "We found these, last Thursday. At twilight, the same place we saw the lamp-post." She held out the handkerchief, then carefully unwrapped it without touching the golden or emerald ring. "We were wondering if they were magic. They-- hum."

"Is there some kind of no-touching rule?" asked Jenny. She frowned slightly as she leaned forward to study the rings.

"I'm not sure," Susan said hesitantly. "They just seem rather dangerous, and the humming, well. IT's unnerving." She sighed. "The annoying thing is that they feel familiar. As if I've read about them, and should recognize them. But if I did, or if I knew them in Narnia, I've utterly forgotten."

Jenny nodded at her desk. "Put them down?" Her eyes were slightly wide. "They reek of some pretty serious mojo, but I'm going to have to check them out more closely."

Susan put them down on the desk, and leaned back, folding her hands together. "I don't know what to think about this. It feels like a sign. More, a clue. But I don't know what it means." She sighed. "Peter has two others, identical to these, we split them up." Susan looked up. "And, another request. For an internet search or research, or whatever you call it."

"With me, it's a little bit of both," said Jenny, closing out her web browser. She peered at the rings again. "They're--" She shook her head. "Kinda loud, if that makes any sense."

"It does. We've been afraid to touch them, actually." Susan looked down at her interlaced fingers. "If you could look for anything about the estate of a Professor Diggory Kirke. Died in 1948. He had-- books, research, myths, historical tomes. And he'd been to Narnia. And he owned the wardrobe that first took us there. I'd like to know what became of it all, if you could find out. I know it's a longshot, but it's the only other thing I could think of."

"In '48?" Jenny started tapping on her keyboard. "That name sounds familiar." She brought up a screen, skimmed it quickly, then sighed heavily and turned to Su. "The train crash? When I was researching your family I got a list of--well, everyone involved."

Susan nodded, quiet for a few moments, then said, "He was a friend of the family. We went and stayed with him during the Blitz in '41. Uncle Diggory wasn't a friend then, just a slightly intimidating old man with hundreds of antiquities and interesting things in his house. After we got back from Narnia, he was the only adult we told the truth. It turned out later-- much later-- that he'd been there when he was a boy." She sighed. "He and Aunt Polly were both on the train too."

Jenny picked her mug back up, drinking the last few swallows quickly. "I'm sorry," she said softly. "I wish things had happened differently."

"Yes." There really wasn't much else to be said about that, was there. "This feels so important, Jenny. But I don't know what it means. I appreciate any help you can give me."

"For you? I can manage to dig something up," said Jenny. "Lemme boot up a couple programs I've got going and see what we can dig up about these rings first, before I start up the research."

"That would be fine." Su smiled at her, then said, "Meet for coffee this weekend, and talk some more?"

"Sounds like a plan," said Jenny. "You gonna be okay?"

"I will be." Susan dodged the question a little. "Thank you for asking, though. I'll see you later, Jenny."

Jenny smiled, but she wasn't fooled. "Later, Su," she said.
